Mashing one face of a body only

Hi, i have searched but did not find the answer on the forums or help files. I am trying to mesh the curved part of a cylinder but not the flat faces - i am following a tutorial but this step is not shown. I include a picture below of what i need. Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you

that is a surface mesh. click face you want to make mesh and right click to make surface mesh. All are in meshing screen
