Hi guys! I want to simulate flow in 3D centrifugal fan with casing. I have done the tutorial for 2D fan blower and i am having issues in how to properly mesh the domain and define interface. I plan to use MFR method. Can anybody please guide me what would be the best way to mesh. If anybody is interested i can upload the CAD model, it has 3 components, impeller, impeller air(this will be moving with some rpm) and shroud air.

I am attaching a schematic of the problem. Basically i have 3 components, shroud air, impeller and impeller air surrounding the blades. I perform a boolean operation subtract impeller blades from impeller air and then i subtract this impeller air from the shroud air. I define the circular area in front of blades as inlet and outlet is the rectangular area on the left of the figure. But now i am not sure how to mesh it, i am trying to mesh it in default mesh but i am not sure how accurate that will be.
Far.. can you tell me how to go about meshing in turbogrid. Can i directly use my cad model as input to turbogrid and then perform boolean operations? what is the procedure, if you have a similar tutorial in turbogrid it will be of great help. |

This geometry can be meshed in Ansys Meshing. If you are a beginner, then do not lose time with the other apps. Have a look at the tutorials and then, you should be able to create the grid.

Yes i was able to mesh using default meshing. But i am not able to run the simulation, its very slow on my system. And also the mesh is not optimized, its very fine at the blades and coarse at other parts. Anyway i will try to run the simulation and see how it goes. I have two components, impeller air (rotating part) and shroud air (rest of the fluid domain). Do i need to created the interface between these parts or fluent will automatically detect the impeller air as interior. I am using MRF method.

I have the same problem.
How must i mesh this parts with ansys meshing? Please explain more about MRF approach in centrifugal fan problem? thank |

If the nodes on each side are matching then, you do not have to create an interface. But if you have non-conformal mesh then, you have to create an interface. Cheers, Koray |
