WEBINAR: Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization of Arbitrarily Complex Geometries Using TURBOdesign Shaper | 29th October

Posted By: Advanced Design Technology
Date:Wed, 7 Oct 2015, 4:36 p.m.

This webinar will introduce TURBOdesign Shaper, a new software product of Advanced Design Technology that targets to ease the design of arbitrarily complex geometrical shapes. It is a unique solution for sensitivity analysis and optimization with computational cost independent of the complexity.

Abstract:

Shape optimization with existing methodologies is typically restricted to relatively simple geometries, which can be sufficiently represented by just a few control variables. This is because the associated computational cost of examining more complex geometries is practically prohibitive. Important stationary components such as suction elbow or double entry inlet volute geometry are designed via expensive trial and error experiments and rely heavily upon experience. This procedure can probably never achieve the mathematically optimal shape, and it would have to be repeated for every new part. In an industrial environment this is unaffordable both time and cost wise.

These stationary components create the upstream environment for the pump impeller and hence affect its efficiency and cavitation performance sometime more than the impeller design. Should engineers have access to how sensitive these surfaces are with respect to their targets (e.g. overall total pressure drop minimization or velocity uniformity maximization before an impeller inlet), they would have the know-how to improve their designs very rapidly.

TURBOdesign Shaper resolves this problem. Sensitivity information can now be acquired for any arbitrary complex geometry and at a cost that is independent from the number of control points. Such a computation is resolved in just a single solution of a numerical system and therefore, sensitivities can be evaluated in a matter of minutes or hours, no matter how complex the geometry under question is.
