Success of First ‘International Oil And Gas CFD Conference’ (IOCC) Confirms Growing Importance of CFD Technology

Date:Thu, 21 Dec 2006, 1:08 p.m.

The first International Oil and Gas CFD Conference (IOCC) has confirmed the increasing importance the Oil and Gas Industry is placing on CFD and other CAE technologies. The event surpassed all expectations with 130 delegates attending the conference, held on 30th November – 1st December in London. Plans are already being made for an even bigger IOCC in two year’s time.

The event was organised by ANSYS Inc., a global leader in CAE technologies, including CFD, in response to a significant increase and expansion in the use of CFD in the Oil and Gas Industry over recent years. Delegates included company presidents, managers, CFD and process engineers and professors, there to learn about best practice, share information and ideas on the application of CFD, and to see the very latest developments in the technology. The event had a truly international flavour, with attendees from 16 countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

Presentations were given by a number of high-profile keynote speakers including Raghu Menon of Shell Global Solutions and Derek Colman of BP Chemicals which articulated the potential for CFD technology in the Oil & gas and petrochemical Industry. Application and modelling areas that were covered extensively by presenters included Separation Technologies, Dispersion Modelling, Refinery Modelling, LNG, and Downhole & Drilling Operations, coupled with leading-edge research into Discrete Element Modelling, Vortex-Induced Vibration, and Multiphase Flows. There was also a special award given for the best paper at the conference, with Mark Savory of Halliburton U.S. receiving the most votes from delegates for his presentation (co-authored by Robert Darbe), ‘Capability of CFD to Simulate Non-Newtonian Fluid Displacement in Annular Gaps.’ Sponsors at the event included Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, IBM and Sharc.

Commenting on the event, attendee Hassan Al Beloushi from Occidental of Oman Inc., says: “It was a great chance for me to learn more about CFD applications. I was impressed with the professionalism shown by the organizers, presenters and everybody. Hope to see you again in the next IOCC”.

Dr. Ahmad Haidari, Global Director Chemical & Processing industries for Fluent Inc., a subsidiary of ANSYS Inc. commented: “We are extremely pleased that the IOCC has proven to be such a success. We intend to grow and develop this unique biennial, industry-specific forum for those involved with the use of CFD and related CAE technologies going forward.”

The next IOCC is provisionally planned to take place in Houston, Texas, U.S.A. Keep watching the information on the ANSYS Inc. ‘Events’ section of www.ansys.com for more details.
