Manchester, England
April 30th 2003
The UK Pilot Centre of ERCOFTAC (the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) has proposed an annual day called Osborne Reynolds Day in honour of one of our most outstanding fluid mechanicists. This event is proposed to meet and exchange ideas, and hear some outstanding overview research lectures on key aspects of our subject - that is, in Flow Turbulence and Combustion (FTAC).
As well as a programme of keynote lectures, there will be oral presentations of interesting current and re-cently completed PhD research projects. The best presentation will be awarded The Osborne Reynolds Prize.
To bring together for one day each year the FTAC community in the UK to learn about impor-tant research advances in these fields, and to talk informally with colleagues from across the country working in common areas. An important aspect of the day will be presentations by about-to-graduate (or just graduated) Ph D's who will engage in friendly competition for the Osborne Reynolds Prize.
While ERCOFTAC-UK plans that this will be an annual event, because Osborne Reynolds' career was en-tirely in Manchester, it is appropriate that our first Osborne Reynolds Day should be held in that city. A selection of the extensive artefacts from Reynolds' time as a professor together with an absorbing account of his career and life will be loaned for the occasion by the University of Manchester.

Venue The Conference will be held at UMIST, Renold Building, Lecture Theatre C2, on Wednesday 30th April 2003.
Lunch, coffee breaks and the closing reception are included. UMIST is located in central Manchester, about 10 minutes walk from Piccadilly Railway Station.
The competition is open to all current research students or assistants registered for a PhD at a UK university in one of the areas covered by FTAC. Doctoral graduates are also eligible who submitted their PhD theses no earlier than January 1st 2002. Exceptionally, European PhD students may enter if they spent at least one year of their training at a UK university; likewise UK students undertaking their PhD at a Euro-pean university may also apply.
There are five stages in the competition as follows:
Entrants are invited to submit an abstract summarizing their research on no more than 2 sides of A4. The abstract should begin with a title and the name and address of the entrant. The text should be typed in a 10 point font and, if figures are to be included, these must also fit within the 2-sides limit. Abstracts must be submitted by 31 January 2003, preferably as an attachment, to Prof. BE Launder, email (brian.launder@umist.ac.uk) with a copy to Prof. MA Leschziner (mike.leschziner@ic.ac.uk).
A panel will review the abstracts and identify a maximum of sixteen abstracts whose authors will be invited to compete in one of two regional heats, one in London, one in Manchester in February 2003. The time allocated for each oral presentation will be 20 minutes including questions. The assessment of the presentations will be based on the novelty and interest of the research, the qual-ity of the visual aids and, especially, the quality of the oral presentation. The judges decision will be final. (It would be helpful, when submitting the abstract, if contributors would indicate whether they would prefer to take part in the London or Manchester regional heats though this information will not be used in any way to determine whether they will be selected for the heats).
From the heats, the panel will identify up to four finalists who will present their work at the Osborne Reynolds Day. On that occasion presenters will again be allocated 20 minutes each. A group of senior workers in FTAC present at the Day will choose the winner.
Entrants (or their research supervisors) must bear the costs of preparing their talks and travelling to the heats. For the finalists, travel costs (2nd class rail or equivalent) to the Osborne Reynolds Day will be reimbursed. All competing in the heats will be exempted from registration fees.
The winner will receive a cheque for £200 and all finalists will receive a commemorative prize.
