Rutherford, N.J. (March 22, 2012) – Demonstrating the value of CFD simulation and high performance computing for small manufacturing companies, Steve M. Legensky, founder and general manager of Intelligent Light, will present “HPC, Data Management, and Racing Bicycle Wheels” at the 26th annual conference of the National High Performance Computer and Communications Council March 26-28 in Newport, Rhode Island.
Legensky’s March 27th presentation highlights the successful collaboration between Intelligent Light, provider of the industry-leading FieldView™ CFD post-processing software, and Zipp Speed Weaponry, a small U.S. manufacturer of racing bicycle wheels and components. Dr. Matthew N. Godo, FieldView product manager and lead researcher on an ongoing bicycle wheel aerodynamics study, employed parallel computing on a remote HPC system to perform unsteady CFD calculations and used extract databases (XDBs) to efficiently analyze volumes of data. Engineers at Zipp leveraged this combined power of HPC and CFD as they developed a radical new wheel design. The result, Zipp’s Firecrest, was called a “sensation: the fastest spoke wheel ever” and “aerodynamically a revelation” in the July 2011 issue of Tour Magazine.
The HPCC conference features a keynote address by John West, director of the U.S. Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) and Special Assistant for High Performance Computing to the Director, Information Technology Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center. Legensky joins other notable conference participants including Dr. Douglass Post, chief scientist of the HPCMP; Dr. Rupak Biswas, chief of the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division; and Dr. Bill Feiereisen, senior scientist and corporate strategist in HPC at Intel Corporation. More information about the conference can be found at hpcc-usa.org.
Details of Dr. Godo’s wheel research, including animations and a free case study, can be found at ilight.com/wheel.
