Short Course

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of Transitional and Turbulent Flows

Numerical, Physical & Implementation Issues Cranfield University, UK

6-8 November 2006

Aims and Scope Large Eddy Simulation (LES) becomes increasingly an established scientific computing approach for predicting transitional and turbulent flows. It is used extensively to elucidate the physics of turbulence and to compute flows of industrial relevance, wherever Reynolds-averaged models are not sufficiently accurate and direct numerical simulation techniques are prohibitively expensive. There are a number of different LES methods currently pursued by researchers, which share some similarities with respect to numerical and physical modelling, but also encompass advantages and shortcomings depending on the ‘design’ details.

The 3-day intensive Short Course is intended to cover in detail a number of LES issues including: numerical methods; subgrid scale models; validation; analysis of results; relation of numerical dissipation and subgrid scale models; implicit and hybrid LES methods; effects of initial and boundary conditions; and implementation in structured and unstructured grids. Moreover, the short course will cover application of modern LES techniques in aerodynamics, turbulent mixing, combustion, as well as it will present the potential of LES in emerging application areas.

The course is addressed to a broad audience including research scientists and engineers, postgraduate students and industrial practitioners concerned with the development and/or application of LES in Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil and Chemical Engineering, Atmospheric and Oceanographic Applications as well as other Environmental disciplines.
