London & New York, May 10, 2005 – CD-adapco, the leading provider of CAD-embedded flow simulation solutions today announced their participation at the 2005 Paris Air Show, the leading international event for the aviation, aeronautics and space industries, taking place at Le Bourget Airport, France, from June 13 - 19, 2005.
The use of CFD in the aerospace community has evolved. No longer viewed as a replacement for wind tunnel experiment, CFD has gained a reputation as a powerful tool for creative design. However, CFD is increasingly required to earn the title of a responsive mainstream tool, providing information within the restrictive timescales of the design process. Previously CFD engineers were able spend months constructing a mesh for a complete aircraft simulation, however competitive pressure means that now the entire aircraft polar needs to be simulated in just a few days. In order to meet this challenge, aerospace companies are increasingly turning to commercial CFD solutions. One such solution is CD-adapco's newly released flagship code: STAR-CCM+.
Although a general-purpose code in spirit, STAR-CCM+ was conceived with the explicit requirement that the needs of the aerospace community had to be fully met. Offering accuracy, which is at least equivalent to in-house aero codes, STAR-CCM+ offers a host of additional benefits and does not require the years of "fine-tuning" which is a feature of many such solutions.
STAR-CCM+ also includes a state-of-the-art segregated solver, which is ideal for low-Mach number simulations. Switching between the segregated solver and each of the coupled solvers is a trivial single step process. For example, the segregated solver can be used to quickly provide a sensible initial condition, from which the coupled solvers can be run to convergence. The major benefit of this is that users can use a single CFD package for all simulation regimes, whether subsonic, transonic or hypersonic.
One of the major obstacles for aerospace companies in the simulation of complete aircraft configurations was making the choice between traditional structured, highly accurate but costly hexahedral or unstructured, easier and less accurate tetrahedral meshes. Polyhedral meshing from CD-adapco offer the best of both worlds, the automatic meshing benefits of tetrahedra combined with near hexahedral accuracy. Extensive testing has shown that typical polyhedral mesh requires less than one fifth of the cell count of a tetrahedral mesh to deliver an equivalent or improved level of accuracy.
STAR-CCM+ can be embedded within CATIA V5 or Pro/Engineer so that the CFD solution becomes an integral part of the CAD model. No other approach will get you from a CAD model to an accurate CFD solution more quickly or reliably.
Come and find out more about STAR-CCM+ at the CD-adapco stand at Le Bourget - Hall 4 Booth G9.
