SIMULATE Arranged by Techfest, IIT Bombay and Zeus Numerix

Zeus Numerix and Techfest, IIT Bombay have partnered together to bring for the first time in India, a Computational Fluid Dynamics competition, SIMULATE. Techfest 2009 has provided a platform for students across the country to come together and compete against each other in simulating CFD problems and generating results.

The world today, is moving towards virtualizing all processes. Product design is one such area where physical testing is being replaced by simulations. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been in the forefront causing this replacement. From designing high velocity missiles, aircrafts and F1 cars, to oil flow in pipe, everything is being simulated and engineers are arriving at better designs regularly. Due to its importance CFD has received a thrust area status at the US, European Union, India and IIT Bombay too.

Zeus Numerix shares the idea of Techfest 2009, "Defy Convention" and hence partnered to create the CFD competition SIMULATE. Keeping in view of the greater demand of trained manpower and the ever increasing thirst for better efficiency, Zeus/Techfest team felt the need to fulfill its responsibility of exposing students to this complex, yet intellectually satisfying technology.

As CFD is practiced by various departments such as Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical and Civil, a competition was designed to pose some practical problems to students who would try to solve them and analyze the results. This would help the students go through the complete CFD cycle and prepare to take up more complex challenges. The competition works as follows.

Level 0: ZNTutor-CFD 2.0 has been provided to all registered participants to get acquainted to CFD basics and a feel of CFD softwares.

Level 1: There would be 4 problem statements of the same difficulty level covering various disciplines of engineering viz Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, Chemistry. The participant can choose any of the given problem statement. Student edition of CFDExpert 4.4 would be made available along with these statements. Top 25 solutions from those submitted would then be called to compete at Techfest 2009.

Level 2: Selected candidates would be given A UNIQUE CFD problem statement to solve within the stipulated time during the festival. Solutions would be judged for accuracy, approach of simulation and its final analysis. Winners will be awarded prizes.

Zeus Numerix has provided free licensed copies of ZNTutor-CFD 2.0 to all the participants and have also provided additional material and support for the participants. More than 100 students have already registered for the event and have received free licenses for ZNTutor-CFD.
