Aircraft, Rotorcraft, Jet Engines and UAVs flying through icing clouds encounter the problem of ice formation on critical surfaces, on nacelles, in engines and on appendages (probes/ detectors/antennae/optronics). This can jeopardize flight by altering aerodynamic performance and reducing handling qualities.
CFD is proving itself a cost-effective aid-to-design-and-certification tool. The current trend is to bring to bear advanced, integrated and realistic 3D simulations, using new physical models, to comprehensively explore the combined flight and icing envelopes, optimize designs, and focus tunnel and flight tests.
This course illustrates the state-of-the-art of CFD applications in icing simulations and links theory to applications. The course should be of value to all concerned with in-flight icing, and is structured to be of equal interest to aerospace design engineers, simulation code users, detection and protection systems manufacturers, regulators, ACOs and DERs.
Lectures covers all aspects of in-flight icing simulation, from initial design to certification, including: CFD methods for simulating in-flight icing, water impingement, ice accretion and, anti- and de-icing; Handling quality issues in icing; The in-flight certification process; CFD in aid of certification of aircraft, helicopters, jet engines, UAVs, sensors, detectors and optronics.
The instructors bring a wealth of aggregate knowledge, and comprise scientists, design engineers, code developers and regulators.
