Dear Friend: I am introducing a new book from Springer Nature that captures the story of the emergence of a new field of engineering. I am taking this liberty since you are an engineer or closely related to one.
“Man inhabits Fluids and Fluids inhabit Man”. About 70% of human body is water and water covers about 70% of the earth. Life is not possible without air and water. And about 90% or our energy requirements are supplied by fluids. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is an esoteric field of engineering that came into existence only half a century ago with the advent of the Electronic Computer. In those 50 years, it has evolved from a geeky art into a multi-billion enterprise practiced by over a 100,000 engineers and scientists. There is hardly a field of human enterprise that is not touched by CFD – be it industry, agriculture, science, engineering or environment. With AI and Virtual Reality, it is even being used to make movies! I was lucky enough to be part of a 3 person team, led by an exceptionally gifted engineer, Prof. D. Brian Spalding, at Imperial College that helped develop this then nascent branch of engineering in late 1960’s. This story of 50 Years of CFD in Engineering is captured in this latest of our books published by Springer Nature. These are trying times. In the Chinese parlance, “interesting times”. Please, take care and stay safe. Cheers Akshai Kumar Runchal
