We have received complaints that some people do not like it when users reply to very old threads. Our policy so far has been to not automatically lock any old threads. It is not possible to reply to a locked thread. I think that it is nice if people can reply to old threads and bring back topics that are still of interest. But it can also be irritating if very old threads are replied to when you know that the old topic is dead and it would have been better to post a new thread.

We do give out infractions / warnings to people who "steal threads" by replying to old threads asking their own questions that are not related to the original question. Stealing threads is against the forum rules.

Sometimes we have locked old threads that have a tendency to attract replies and we know that replies to those threads are not relevant or will not get any response.

How about this....

Autolock old threads... and then add a button/link to the locked thread that will start a new thread with a reference to the old thread.

That way posters can easily add a new/updated Q with a link to a related, but now locked post.

This will allow question continuity without cluttering an old thread.
wyldckat and akidess like this.
