Hello FOAMERS,

When I read some of the material presented in OpenFOAM Workshops e.g at this link -

http://openfoam-extend.sourceforge.n...tadt/OFW7.html

I can only think of one thing - It would have been so good to hear these presentations (atleast some, if not all). But we all know it is sometimes just not possible to be present at all these meetings due to several reasons.

I strongly feel that if these meetings can be video recorded then they can have a lot more impact e.g here is one brilliant example -- http://web.mit.edu/hml/ncfmf.html -- of a similar and successful attempt. I think students and inexperienced guys will benefit a lot if it happens. What do you guys think?

Looking forward to how you guys (FOAMERS) will respond to this,
Fluid Dynamics (Yup, that's my handle here)

PS: Another small request - I have been trying to download Dr. Tuković's IB method training material but whenever I use the download link on the 7th OFW webpage -- the Thin Film Simulation material gets downloaded. Sorry for contaminating (in case you are feeling that) the post with this request!!!!!

I think I left my postscript incomplete last time -

If somebody has Dr. Tukovic's material (case files, solver etc.) on Immersed Boundary Method from the 7th OFW then please try and email it to me - cfd.with.openfoam@gmail.com

Thanks very much

Quick answer: It's as easy as removing the file name from the download link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/open...ZeljkoTukovic/ - there you'll find all of the slides and materials by Tukovic on OFW7!
anishtain4 and wenjie like this.

Thanks Bruno............

And Ehsan. It is not in my hands to record the workshop presentations and I won't be participating in the 8th OFW either, which is why I raised that question.

I am just sharing another fine example here -

Please see the section "Recorded master courses"

Hi cfd.with.openfoam,
It would be nice if you post your suggestion in the thread announcing the OFW8: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...-workshop.html
Best Regards,
Paulo

It has been discussed for one of the previous workshops. The point at the time was: this costs money. A substantial amount, even if you have a guy just hold the camera and then do the most basic editing (just look through the video once to see if there are problems and cut the start and the end). As the only source of finance for the workshop is the fee of the people attending the cost for doing videos would have to be paid by people who are already there and therefor don't need them. If you have a feasible way to finance that (not "Add a 'Flattr'-button. That will pay for it". It won't) speak up (just do a rough and very optimistic estimate: take whatever you would have seen as an "acceptable" hourly wage when you were a student. Multiply that with the amount of hours to be recorded. Multiply that with 2.5 (recording+"cutting"). Add whatever taxes and social security you have to add to pay that money legally. Check how much the rent of decent equipment is (the audio quality of cell phone videos would mean that you probably won't understand half of it). You get a sum. Assume now that there are 100 people (my estimate goes more in the direction of 50 because people will copy from others) who are willing to pay for these videos. Divide that sum by that number. Then ask yourself: are you willing to pay that amount beforehand?)

But this is only my opinion. Contact the organizer of this years workshop. Maybe he is more "open minded" towards that issue than I am.

PS: I agree it would be nice. IF the videos are professionally done. Otherwise it is only a talking blur in a noisy room. With 3 minute segments of people setting up their laptop inbetween.

to have the money beforehand: how about using kickStarter?

set up a project and people give preathorize the payment, but the actual money is taken off the card only if the budget is reached at the end of a defined timeframe.

I know I'd love to chime in to have a chance to see the recordings.

That would be an option. But honestly: I think it is a little late now. You've got to:
- contact the organizer
- work out who will do it (with which equipment)
- work out a budget (that depends on the above)
- start the funding process
- only after that you can make travel arrangements for whoever will do it (last minute arrangements probably cost more than you budgeted)

And then there's also the issue whether people want to be filmed (or are allowed to be). Plus I think that the really interesting stuff happens between the talks and you can't film that (I think the added value of having a recording when you already have the slides is not that big ... you can't ask questions for instance)

Don't want to discourage you. Finish the first 3 points with a sound budget and I'll put in my share too

well, i'd say that is would be cheaper to use someone on site than to grab someone and fly there from the other part of the world...

and there are three months to the start of the conference, not really too late.

I've sent a mail of inquires to the organizers. I'll post any Updates.

Well. It's an island. Even someone from Seoul would have to fly there
