We are seeking two highly self-motivated Ph.D. students (2024 Fall/Spring) to
join Dr. Chang Liu’s research group at the University of Connecticut,
Department of Mechanical Engineering. Potential topics include wall-bounded
shear flows; flow control; double-diffusive convection; Dynamical system
approach to analyze fluid flows.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in a relevant field, e.g. Fluid Mechanics, Computational
Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline. Exceptional candidates
with a bachelor’s degree will also be considered.
2. Strong background in calculus, linear algebra, and physics.
3. Programming language in MATLAB, Python, C++, Fortran.
4. Self-motivated and passionate about research, and possess effective
communications skills for presentation and academic paper writing.
5. Optional: Previous experience in control theory, nonlinear dynamical systems
and optimization.

About PI:
Dr. Chang Liu joined the University of Connecticut, Department of Mechanical
Engineering in August 2023. He conducted postdoc research in the Department of
Physics at the University of California, Berkeley from 2021 to 2023, where his
major research focus is analyzing double-diffusive convection and geophysical
flows using bifurcation theory, asymptotic analysis and direct numerical
simulations. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns
Hopkins University in 2021, with research focused on wall-bounded shear flows
analyzed by control theory and optimization. He also obtained M.S.E. degrees in
both Applied Mathematics and Statistics (2021) and Mechanical Engineering (2020)
from Johns Hopkins University. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Naval
Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a
second major in Computer Technology and its Applications, both in 2017. Dr.
Chang Liu has published more than 10 journal articles as the first author
including four articles on Journal Fluid Mechanics. One paper is recognized by
Corrsin-Kovasznay Outstanding Paper Award.
