CategoryJob in Academia
EmployerUniversity of Calgary
LocationCanada, AB, Calgary
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, April 01, 2021
The Computational Fluid & Structural Mechanics group (CFSMgroup) at the University
of Calgary has an open fully-funded Ph.D. position in High-Fidelity Simulation for
Marine Applications.

The project focuses on the design and analysis of complex systems in marine and
ocean engineering using high-fidelity numerical framework. This includes ship
hydrodynamics, marine propellers, and floating hydro-kinetic turbines. The project
is supported by several grants from industry and governmental agencies. The
student will work closely with other group members on simulating complex problems
that include free-surface and cavitating flows, turbulent flows over complex
hydrodynamic surfaces and rotating machines, using in-house finite element based
code that is built on Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) and Stabilized techniques and
is suitable for large-scale computing. The application of the Reduced Order
Modeling (ROM) techniques will also be explored.

The potential candidates should have:

- a strong background in numerical methods and fluid mechanics
- prior experience with turbulence modeling and/or analysis and/or theory (or
completed courses in turbulence)
- experience in developing numerical models, codes, and computation algorithms
- experience with CFD using FEM or FVM
- strong hands-on experience with computing in Fortran, C/C++, Python, or other
- familiarity with at least one mesh generation tool (Gmsh, ANSA, Pointwise, or
- experience with parallel computing (e.g. MPI, CUDA)
- strong interest and self-motivation to perform cutting-edge research and conquer
challenges in real-world engineering and to publish high-impact papers.

Position is available as soon as January 2021 (the actual start date can be
negotiated). Please send to Dr. Artem Korobenko ( the
following documents:

- up-to-date CV
- unofficial transcripts
- unofficial English language test results (if applicable)
- one-page cover letter.  In your cover letter, please include projects you worked
on and a short proposal (few paragraphs) for the potential research topic that you
would like to work on during your program at the University of Calgary related to
the project description.
