OpenFOAM version comparison: v1706 versus 2.x 3.x and 4.x?

I'm new to open foam and decided to go along with the windows version instead of redoing dual boot. The current version stated is v1706, but how does that compare to versions 2.x 3.x and 4.x that everyone seems to talk about in the forums and videos. I'm having some problems using older codes and this seems to be key in order to solve it.

Quick answer: You will have to look into the changes made in the source code of OpenFOAM between versions.
On the top right corner of the main page at https://openfoamwiki.net - you can find links to all of the release notes for each version, which should help you at least start getting a bit of orientation on what changed from one version to another. There are also a couple of pages that help guide on the changes made between more recent versions:
