Hi, I shoot long range target rifle for fun and for my own interest I want to try and replicate the results of the paper below using OpenFOAM.
The authors use Pointwise for mesh generation which costs. Does anyone have any recommendations for a new user of this software on using OpenFOAM's snappyhexmesh instead? I'm wary as to why these authors did not use it themselves. I'm happy to put in the work on this myself but it would be good to be pointed in the right direction first by someone with a bit of experience. Hi,
maybe you want to read A comprehensive tour of snappyHexMesh => http://www.openfoamworkshop.org/2012...ningSlides.tgz There is also a new GUI Tool Helyx for preprocessing OF with snappyhexmesh (shm) that might be of interest for you, or you might want to use engrid (that is not using shm). Discretizer goes in the same direction as Helyx but does not have the same capabilaties. |

Hey thanks a million elvis. I've looked at Helyx-OS (free), engrid and Discretizer now and they seem excellent although I'm clueless on the subtleties. Are there any serious strengths or weaknesses for these three options I should consider before diving into one of them? If they're all equally good for the job it doesn't matter.

Hello,
I think that Helyx-OS is the best "free" solution when dealing with SHM, it comes from a company that knows SHM very well. engrid it also a very good meshing tool with another user in mind, the developer of engrid is very kind. |

Thanks again elvis. I have tried getting helyx and engrid going on my fedora 16 machine and ballsed it up on both counts. I think it's time to call it a day and wait for someone with a bit more ability than myself to figure it out.
