high gradients introduced by symmetry condition?

I define my geometry as STL files usually symmetric around the XY plane. For internal flows I noticed high gradients at inlets that seem to originate from the edge of the inlet and the symmetry plane. Is there a way to ensure mesh quality at this particular location?
