Hi Niels!
I share your feeling about the Copy/Paste-crossposting. But I've always been to lazy to answer to tell these people in the thread why they won't get any answers. I had a short mind-search ("What makes me answer a question") and I compiled the questions on http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Ho..._Message_Board and the idea would be to copy/paste the URL as an answer for such copy/pasters Right now the page reflects my personal views and my personal (mis)use of the English language. So if anybody wants to add his input (preferably persons who have already answered 2 or 3 questions in their time) or correct on it I'd be interested (it's a Wiki, so just start editing) I hope the text doesn't sound to harsh, but I think that maybe sometimes these people are thinking "Why is nobody answering me" and this might actually help them Bernhard

Hi Bernhard
That page gives a good introduction to 'good behaviour' in this Forum and I do not think it is too harsh. Like the WoW-comparison. / Niels

Hi
about the good behaviour page, I want to ask who is the forum manager ? Because normally if questions are asked twice they are removed. Or people are told a link to go where the topic has been posted yet. For example this topic What is the purpose of this FORUM is posted also in the category Others. Why is it not removed ? And something to improve, to know in which topic i am right now i have to scroll up to the top. In my opinion the structure should be improved. There are ready solutions which are cheap(don't cost anything just a little bit time) and easy to use so for example Joomla is one of the examples for a cms(content management system). Also bugs i dont agree that they should be posted in the forum for that purpose there are tools like mantis or bugzilla. Then maybe a project organization tool could also be integrate. Somebody can see who is working on what kind of project. So maybe somebody wants to develop a solver before he starts, he looks into it for example opengroupware or egroup and knows hey somebody else is doing the same. So they can share the development and speed it up. But the biggest request from my side would be the usage of a professional bugtracker. And last but not least i would recommand that the main users dont give their real email but a lets call it demangeld one somebody[at]somebody[dot]net Because those can not be so easily catched up by email search bots. Ok thats it dont bother with me hope it was not to much critisim. Beside all that the community consist of great people which high knowledge. Thank you for reading. Franz |

Hi Franz!
I can't say for sure, but current policy on the Forum is to not remove any postings. Checking for double postings IS work and these guys have enough to do (amongst other things preparing a release. Three cheers for 1.5, BTW) and as it was said at some other place: this is not the WorldOfWarcraft-forum, so the intellectual capabilities of the people attending are such, that if they are politely asked to adjust their behavior they are capable of doing so. In other words: what I like about this forum is that there is no need for a strong moderator. About the forum-software: I don't like it too, but what I really would hate is losing years of searchable archives due to a migration. If it HAS to be changed I would vote for a mailing list (or a Usenet-group), but I'm a very conservative person Bernhard

Re. (ab)using a Forum as a bugtracker:
+ fully integrated with main forum, no need to register + people can choose whether or not to get email from it + maintains history of comments + very easy to setup/maintain - not immediately clear what status of bugs is - what is solved/what version - no strict coupling to source code Maybe for now we can delete all bugs solved in 1.5. Or split them per version. Mattijs |
