Letter from the Editor
Even a brief exposure to national and international news is enough to generate a feeling of despair that nothing is working as it used to, everything is slowing down and there are no clear remedies. To compound this we have to deal with election time in which we are told all the bad things about the candidates and their platforms, but very little about how they will make our lives better.

Development Focus
Parallelizing FLOW-3D using OpenMPOpenMP typically works at the DO loop level, achieving a fine-grain parallelization. It provides a fork-and-join model in which the program begins execution as a single process, or thread (Fig. 1). The thread executes sequentially until a parallel directive is found. The single master thread then creates multiple threads. All threads execute the statements until the end of the parallel region.

Application Note
Simulating cross-bar block ramps with FLOW-3DBlock ramps are modern constructions to conquer large river steps with fish climb possibilities. They are classified into block carpets and block clusters, while clusters are separated into structured, unstructured and self-structured blocks (Tamagni et al. 2010). Limiters of block ramps are due to water depths and flow velocities as well as stability criteria.

How to create a shell mold STL from a casting part design
Sometimes a metal casting engineer may have only a part and runner system for a particular casting design but actually needs to make the mold (or investment) for the part. The user can generate an STL file for the mold by using the thermal penetration depth capability in FLOW-3D v9.4. This saves the user time by not having to build a CAD model of the investment.
