Effect of System Rotation on Turbulence with Applications to Turbomachinery - VKI Lecture Series
The purpose of this Lecture Series is to understand the role of system rotation in turbulent flows from general standpoint as well as from the aspect of rotating machines. This course intends to provide the basic concepts and tools for single-and multi-objective optimization for applications where different disciplines interact such as fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, acoustics, and conjugate heat transfer.
Date: September 20, 2010 - September 24, 2010
Location: von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, Rhode-St-Genese, none, Belgium

Organizer: von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics
Application Areas: Turbomachinery
Special Fields: Turbulence Modeling, Turbulence - LES Methods
Type of Event: Conference, International

Description:

The effect of system rotation on the development of turbulent wakes and boundary layers is of fundamental importance in the study of rotating machinery. The purpose of this Lecture Series is to understand the role of system rotation in turbulent flows from general standpoint as well as from the aspect of rotating machines. Modeling techniques will then be presented, including the state-of-the-art LES, closure modeling and transition applied to rotating machinery flows. Experimental investigations of rotating boundary layers and wakes will also be discussed to enhance the physical understanding in the context of rotating machines.
