TitlePrediction of vortex-induced wind turbine tower vibrations
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerUni Stuttgart: Institute of Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics
LocationGermany, Stuttgart
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure Date* None *
Description:
Context: Take part in the energy transition ─ conduct research in wind energy!

The ever-increasing size of wind turbines and the associated increase in component flexibility lead to an increased risk of aeroelastic instability. In particular, vortex-induced vibrations of the tower occur during the construction of the turbine, where resonance between the tower's natural frequency and cyclically detaching, unsteady vortex streets in the wake can lead to a critical oscillation and even failure of the tower structure.

As part of a German joint research project led by Enercon and involving universities, research institutes and industry, the mechanisms of vortex-induced oscillations will be studied for different wind conditions and prediction methods will be developed and validated. Detailed wind tunnel experiments will be carried out by a project partner to validate the simulations.

The IAG is a member of the WindForS research network, whose research focus is wind energy in complex terrain. WindForS partners have initiated a major research initiative in which federal and state funding is being used to advance the construction of a test field in complex terrain. As part of this effort, two instrumented research turbines are being erected and detailed measurements of the local wind fields including deformations of the turbines are planned. This test field will be used in further research projects, including the MeTuSA project, in the framework of which this position is to be filled at the IAG.

Project Description
The Wind Energy Working Group at IAG has developed a CFD-based multidisciplinary simulation environment that allows detailed studies of the aerodynamics, aeroelasticity and aeroacoustics of wind turbines. This includes their interactions with the turbulent atmospheric inflow and complex terrain orography, buildings or vegetation. This simulation toolchain will be used in the research project for high-precision aeroelastic simulation of the flow around both tower segments and complete towers to analyze the physics of unsteady wake development in the flow. The wake is calculated using LES CFD, which allows a physically correct representation of wake instabilities and interactions with the turbulent external flow of the atmospheric boundary layer. In addition to the analysis of vortex-induced vibrations, the simulation results and wind tunnel data will be used to further develop an industrially applicable and computationally efficient prediction model. This work builds on many years of research at the IAG.
