Description: | |
The Computational Fluid & Structural Mechanics group (CFSMgroup) at the University of Calgary has an open fully-fundedPh.D. and M.Sc. position in Numerical Modeling for Hypersonic Flows in Thermochemical Nonequilibrium. The role of the Ph.D. student will be to develop the numerical framework to model hypersonic flows in thermochemical nonequilibrium, including the ionization. The student will work with the in-house code for two-temperature equation model. Student will be working with the experimental data obtained at NASA Langley and CSA as well as to perform detailed validation using set of benchmark problems. During the degree the student might also work closely with the researchers from NASA, DLR and academic institutions worldwide (this will also include up to 6 months research internship abroad through MITACS Globalink). The potential candidates should have a strong background in numerical methods, compressible flows, programming (Fortran, C, C++, etc), finite elements/finite volumes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The candidate should be familiar with mesh generation tools (Gmsh, ANSA, or other) and data vizualization tools (e.g. VisIt, Paraview, etc). Experience with parallel computing (MPI, CUDA) is an asset. CFSMgroup is a part of the University of Calgary Aerospace Network (UCAN) which involved collaboration with national and international academic institutions, industrial partners and governmental agencies, including NASA, Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Lockheed Martin, Peraton, and more. Research projects are also sponsored by various Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups in aerospace, which is a potential employment opportunity after the degree. The start date is negotiable but ideally Summer/Fall 2024. To apply, please send your up-to-date CV, unofficial transcripts, and a two-page cover letter to Dr. Artem Korobenko (artem.korobenko@ucalgary.ca). In your cover letter, please include projects you worked on and a one-page proposal for the potential research topic (in the area of hypersonic flows) that you would like to work on during your program at the University of Calgary. Due to the nature of the project, the position is only available to students from EU, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan and UK.
