About the group: My group focuses on developing data-driven and physics-based 
modeling techniques for a variety of engineering problems, such as fluid-structure 
interaction in high-speed flow environments, ship-airwake & aircraft interactions 
for naval applications, and management of large scientific data for DOE and NASA 
applications. Current funding in the group comes from DOE (Department of Energy), 
NASA, and ONR (Office of Naval Research). 


Position Description: 

There are two open positions in the area of data-driven modeling for physics. The 
PhD students will focus on different aspects of data compression, rapid analytics, 
reduced order modeling, and machine learning. An ideal candidate will have:
•	received a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Ocean 
Engineering. Degree holders in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science are also 
encouraged to apply.
•	some experience with modifying/developing/running CFD codes
•	previous experience with Python or C++ coding
•	previous experience in numerical and computational modeling (with emphasis 
on methods development)
•	previous experience or future interest in machine learning (CNNs and RNNs)
•	some experience with finite elements methods development
•	excellent communication skills
