Dear colleagues,
I was working with caelinux discretizer frontend to openfoam. However, I have some problems:
1. There are two discretizer programs in the applications menu, I don't really know the difference between them.
2. The first discretizer worked fine when I tried tutorial, however, even when I change the solver I enter, in the terminal the solver is always displayed as simpleFoam, regardless of what I enter
3. Also, I have complete cases from chalmers university site. When I open the run dialogue in discretizer and input their path, I get fatal error, cannot open folder message
I hope any one can help me.
I am trying to encourage my students to use opensource, especially, that at our university, we really have no budget to buy commercial equivalents like COMSOL and fluent

One is Discretizer and was developed to design the geometries and generate the meshes for using in OpenFOAM. The other is Discretizer::Setup and was developed to assist in the execution of the cases. AFAIK, both aren't fully developed tools (I believe that there is only one person developing the software), but there a few resources you can check:

I'm not sure which version of Discretizer does CAELinux pack with it, but you can try updating it with the latest version available Discretizer's home page.
And like I've said before, both aren't fully developed tools, so you will probably find various capabilities that are still very limited

You might want to check out www.extend-project.de, register there, browse and ask around if there is already a cooperation between universities. I believe that if there isn't one yet, they should be starting soon... or so I hope. OpenFOAM is a free and very powerful CFD toolbox, but it also a toolbox with a very steep learning curve At least depending on what you need it for

Best regards and good luck!

Dear wyldckat,
Than kyou very much for your reply. I'll try to follow your remarks carefully and keep you informed with our progress of using OpenFOAM at our university. I think you're right with discretizer not being fully developed and I do believe that since the tutorial worked well, that most probably the errors that resulted with other applications were due to bugs. We'll try to get around them or work from the OpenFOAM terminal.

Hi there

Bjorn (sp) the developer has updated the software, and it seems better, I have used it to run simple meshes in simplefoam.

the developer has a Gmail account and is very good at replying to questions

kind regards Stephen

I would like to thank you all for your comments and concern. They really encouraged me not to give up. I thank God for that. Things are getting some what better. I've tried to help my students by making educational videos of what I learnt with both openFoam and code_saturne. I 'll quote the links to them , may be they may be helpful to some of your students. The comments are in Arabic. However, the video is clear with out comments. Of course , we are still learning and I am not quite satisfied with results accuracy yet, though they are some what reasonable. Also, I may be making some mistakes because I am working fast but at least I hope that these videos will save others "the 4 months I had to spend on getting things work" . Any comments are welcome either at the forum or at our research group email: mashaheedanfsa@gmail.com

I posted earlier links to cases and educational videos for students who may be interested in getting started with openFoam and code saturne over CAElinux and using it with optimization.
Thank to God , ever since, I added some more trials that I'd like to share with you. They should be useful for those in marine engineering education.

I tried to post these as a new thread with the title "EDU. VIDEOS" but some how I totally can't find how I can start a new thread.
I attach my earlier message containing the other videos that we made earlier for reference.

Dear colleague,
You can enter the air-foil points as wire points in SALOME and let it drawn inside a larger rectangle. Use "cut" then to cut out the foil from inside the rectangle. Then use extrude to extrude the whole geometry in the third dimension perpendicular to the foil plane. I know the problem is 2D but both openFoam and saturne entitle you to extrude 2D problems with very small thickness because they cannot handle 2D problem. This is very similar to the video forAllah_Salome_draw_mesh, however, the foil will be in place of the circle. When you finish, use the airfoil tutorial in openFoam to know how to define the boundary conditions. The video forAllah_drag_openFoam_saturne tells you how the mesh can be exported to openFoam. I've asked the same assignment from 2 of my students. You may email them to see how they progressed with it. ( ali_alex_and@yahoo.com, eslam_699@hotmail.com)
I'll try with it myself and as soon as I get any progress, I'll keep you informed.
God be with you and help you.

Dear colleague,
Could you either attach the files here or send them to my son (student) eslam at eslam_699@hotmail.com. He will give them to me. Just tell him that Dr. Abouelseoud told you to post these files so that we can help you figure out what the problem is.

Dear colleague,
in the file
airfoil3/system/fvSolution
just replace
SIMPLE
{
nNonOrthogonalCorrectors 0;
}

by
SIMPLE
{
nNonOrthogonalCorrectors 0;
pRefCell 0;
pRefValue 0;
}
My experience with discretizer is that the exported case folder often needs editing, so when I get an error message I just search in the openFoam tutorial folder with the keyword that appeared in the message(here pRefCell) to know how to correct it.
In this case, I found the correction in the airfoil2D tutorial in (/tutorials/incompressible/simpleFoam/airfoil2D)
However, when I corrected this mistake I still got an error because openFoam sees the mesh as not 2D. Please try to remesh but this time make the thickness in the third dimension one cell only.
I hope this helps. I 'll try to take a look at the geometry and mesh files. I didn't notice them when I logged in yesterday.

hi
it's already 1 cell in the third direction i used Netgen 1D-2D-3D for meshing
is that right or i suppose to use another method
thanks

Dear colleague,
If you opened the Mesh_1.unv you sent me with a text editor like gedit, you will find that the mesh is not one cell thick in the third dimension (there are several coordinates in the third dimension not just 2 values). To overcome this do this:
Define edge groups over cut_1 for inlet,outlet, upper, bottom , wall ..
Use Netgen 1D-2D to generate a mesh for cut_1
Use create groups from geometry to import the edge groups you created. You will find that they appear with _extruded added to their names.
in the mesh module in the modifications menu, choose extrude mesh and make sure that you choose 1 step and that the generate groups is ticked.
(I found these steps at:
http://www.salome-platform.org/forum...10/thread_3005
)
In the preferences in the file menu in Salome, make sure that automatically generate groups is ticked.
export the mesh to med
(these last two steps are necessary because with out them the extruded groups will not appear in the discretizer)
open the med file in from gmsh and save it as unv mesh file. Now if you open it with an editor you will find it is trully 1 cell thick (the 3rd coordinate is either 0 or 1). However, I still get the same openFoam error that the mesh is 3D.
--> FOAM FATAL ERROR:
This mesh contains patches of type empty but is not 1D or 2D
by virtue of the fact that the number of faces of this
empty patch is not divisible by the number of cells.

From function emptyFvPatchField<Type>::updateCoeffs()
in file fields/fvPatchFields/constraint/empty/emptyFvPatchField.C at line 150.

FOAM exiting

I am willing to give it a second try by next friday ISA because this week is very busy for us because we are preparing some conference work.
In order not to be delaying you, my attempt and some snapshots showing the choices in Salome are at:

Dear colleague,
You are always very welcome to ask. I just hope you would forgive me for not having time to work on it and give it a second try before next friday. For now, I'm really not familiar with running cases to the end with discretizer. I just use it to import the mesh to Foam constant folder and all the rest I edit manually because with my Caelinux2010, it appears discretizer has several bugs. Consider mailing the correct mesh with the error message that appeared to the person who developed discretizer. He responds to emails and I am sure he is eager to recover from any bugs with his program. His email is
bjorn.bergqvist@gmail.com
It would be great , if he would help us overcome discretizer bugs. This would make things easier to many openFoam users.

Dear colleague,
I just want to apologize for not giving it a second try on Friday as I promised. It's just that just after I promised to try to help again a few days later one of my sons died. I still am not able to concentrate well on anything, so please forgive me.
