hello guys!

AFAIK, henry is fixing bugs of these two OpenFOAM versions, why not just fix one instead of fixing two versions of OpenFOAM?

Thanks.

Greetings sharonyue,

The reason is simple:
  • OpenFOAM-2.3.x is the repository with bug fixes for the major version 2.3.
  • OpenFOAM-dev is the repository for new developments. It's essentially the bleeding edge of development and it's from that repository that new major versions will be born.
Something that works in 2.3.0 and 2.3.1, is expected to work in 2.3.x, unless a bug was fixed that requires a slightly different handling, e.g. a boundary condition that has a new parameter that was missing.

Something that works in the 2.3.x version, is not 100% expected to work in the same way as in the development version, as you might have already experienced when going from major version to major version, for example, when you upgrade a case that runs in 1.7.0 and need it to run in 2.3.1, usually there are a lot of changes needed, simply because of the evolution/improvements in the software.

Best regards,
Bruno
