How is the coordinateSystem supposed to be used in rhoPorous...? I am starting to work with porous media to simulate a car's air intake and I do not quite understand the parameters used in the file ..case/constant/porousZones.

The coordinate system is used to define local coordinate system in the cell zone for your porous resistance parameters. It can be seen in the angledDuct example.
Detail information can be found here:

A detailed description of how to do simulations with porous media in OpenFOAM, and a modification to cylindrical coordinates.
